1. Ring sizing. What is the difference between sizing vs. stretching?
answer: First of all ONLY solid band should be stretched. Any ring with stones should NOT be stretched because it will "oval" the setting and loosen the stones. Plus, they will NEVER set the same way again. As for a solid band; it can be done, though it depends on how much it has to go up in size and the thickness of the piece.
2. What is the difference between a satin finish and a hand florentine finish?
answer: A satin finish wears easily. A hand engraved florentine finish is much more deeply engrave and last MUCH longer.
7. Why is my white gold ring yellowing and loosing it's brightness?
answer: Gold is yellow. Alloys are added to make it white. So, over time, all white gold rings will need to be Rhodium plated to renew it's brightness. How often you need to have this done depends on the quality of the alloys used. Rhodium plating needs to be done everywhere from every 3 months to every year.
8. If you are going to have your platium ring sized, make sure it is being sized with platinum instead of white gold. Most people wouldn't even think to ask this question, but you should. Why?
answer: Because gold will contaminate the platinum. White gold has a lower melting point than platinum so this could lead to buring a hole through the ring! Not good.
9. What is low grade solder?
answer: Low grade solder looks like 14k but is 10k or even 8k! 8k-10k wears faster and will discolor over time. They are also all at different melting points so, again you risk burning the piece.
